Contemplating Lobster

(A haibun Poem)

December to May—by the first frigid light of Maine, wake,

haul traps, ropes, buoys and pots beyond the rock-bound village into the sea

searching for . . .

reddish-green larvae

mosquito sized lobsters

flaunting their sharp claws

Abide their planktonic phase.  Bait.  Set.  Harvest traps and plunge combative

pinchers—head first—into boiling water.

minimizing the perception of pain . . .

(Serve no more than three times a week to children, prisoners and indentured servants, less they protest)
